There are two standard sets of criteria used to classify all behavioral and psychological disorders-The International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD- 10) and The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5).
Every diagnosis established at CHMC meets the criteria within these manuals.
Evidence based treatments are studied through research that follows the scientific method. A treatment method (medication or psychotherapy) is deemed effective if a statistically significant number of subjects, within a series of scientifically controlled studies, improve following a treatment (medication or psychotherapy). Effective treatment methods will be included into the guidelines of the World Psychiatric Association and regional entities such as the American and European Psychiatric Association.
